Canoeing and Kayaking in New Zealand

Canoeing and kayaking are very popular in New Zealand and are practiced on rivers, lakes or in sheltered ocean waters.

Several commercial operators offer tours with all necessities provided. Mastering basic skills of paddling and safe exiting from a canoe and wearing a life jacket at all times will make canoeing a safe and enjoyable sport.

The most popular canoeing river is the Whanganui.

Whanganui River is located in Whanganui National Park one of New Zealand’s newest national parks. This river is the longest navigable river in New Zealand and second longest river in the North Island. The 329 kilometers river holds a special attraction for canoeists because its 239 listed rapids offer a wide variety of challenges.

Most canoeists start out at Taumarunui and make their way south to Pipiriki, 79 km from Wanganui.

There are jet boat and motor launch tours as well as river boat cruises in the lower reaches.
